Osteopathy

Osteopaths are qualified allied health care professionals registered with the General Osteopathic Council, who are skilled in diagnosis and treatment. Osteopathy is complementary to and supportive of medicine.

It is primarily a ‘hands on’ manual therapy using a wide variety of treatment modalities, including:

  • Massage techniques
  • Joint manipulation
  • Joint mobilisation
  • Stretches
  • Exercise

Adjuncts to osteopathic treatment may also be used such as:

  • Electrotherapy
  • Ultrasound
  • Dry needling (acupuncture)
  • Vibration therapy
  • Taping
  • Dietary advice

What can you expect on your first visit?

Your first visit will take approximately one hour and will include:

  • Taking a comprehensive case history (listening to your problems and asking some questions)
  • Observations of posture and movement (looking at how you stand and move)
  • Clinical testing of muscles, joints, and nerves (looking for possible causes or consequences of your problem)
  • A full explanation of findings and an honest opinion
  • Treatment and recommendations (as appropriate)

Follow-up treatments are approximately 30 minutes.

Please Note

In order to accurately assess the area to be treated, you may be asked to remove a certain amount of clothing. You will need to wear sensible underwear or shorts. Patients may bring a chaperone to any treatment.
